Alan Cumming Insists, “I Act My Socks Off in ‘The Traitors’”’

For Alan Cumming, hosting The Traitors is already the reward; his Emmy nomination for reality or reality/competition host is just a bonus — one almost as coveted as immunity from elimination. “I really love doing it,” says Cumming of the hit Peacock series (which also scored a nom for best reality competition program) that has […]

Hollywood Flashback: When ‘Dark Shadows’ Vampires Enchanted Lifelong Fans

Nearly 60 years before FX’s comedy What We Do in the Shadows earned its third Emmy nom for best comedy series, the ABC soap opera Dark Shadows brought supernatural storylines featuring vampires, ghosts, werewolves and witches to TV — albeit with less overtly comic qualities — when it premiered in June 1966. Filled with melodramatic […]

When Older Shows Become Newly-Minted Emmy Nominees

Many awards prognosticators expected the drama categories at this year’s Emmys to feature an odd assortment of nominated titles. Carrie Coon on Her ‘Gilded Age’ Character: “I Love That People Don’t Like Her”

On HBO’s The Gilded Age, Carrie Coon stands out among the stacked ensemble cast (she was just one of 34 players to receive a SAG Award nom for best drama ensemble this year), in part because her lead role of Bertha Reynolds allows her to play a rare kind of character on TV these days: […]

Is the Emmys Comedy Category Finally Funny Again?

When it comes to the comedy series category, a hypothetical question arises when imagining how Television Academy members may vote. Should the top prize go to the best show of the eventual eight nominees or the funniest show? Should a series’ humor — or in some cases, lack thereof — impact an Emmy pick? Last […]

‘Elsbeth’ Boss on Pulling Off One Final Twist in Season 1 Finale

Each episode of CBS’ Elsbeth — starring Carrie Preston in the title role, which won her a 2013 Emmy for best guest actress in a drama for the character’s appearance on The Good Wife — follows a similar “howdunit” premise: The audience sees a guest star commit murder, and Preston’s idiosyncratic Elsbeth Tascioni puts together […]

Carla Gugino Talks Finding Humanity in Horror

When Mike Flanagan first spoke to Carla Gugino about his latest Netflix production, The Fall of the House of Usher, he didn’t yet know what it would be beyond something inspired by the work of Edgar Allan Poe. “It was going to be something around a family and elements of Succession,” recalls Gugino. Having worked […]

Despite the many plays, films and TV shows produced by the prolific writer-director, Tyler Perry has avoided overtly mining his own personal history for this body of work. For Gelila Bekele, co-director of Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story (who also shares a child with Perry), she recognized an opportunity to share how Perry built […]
