NBCUniversal says the 2024 Olympics, which ended Aug. 11, averaged a combined 30.6 million viewers across all platforms for its “Paris Prime” daytime telecast (2-5 p.m. ET in the United States) and nightly primetime shows. That’s a huge improvement — 82 percent — on the last Summer Olympics three years ago in Tokyo, which averaged 16.9 million cross-platform viewers. Full story.

Snapshot

Box Office Recovery

As of August 4, the year-over-year deficit in terms of domestic box office revenue had narrowed to 16.4 percent in a win for the industry overall, and the Disney film empire in particular. Just as Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine has reinvigorated the superhero genre, so has Pixar’s Inside Out 2 established that the storied animation studio is finding its stride after a series of stumbles. Full story.

Olympics Set Streaming Record

In the early afternoon of Aug. 6, Peacock and NBCUniversal’s other digital platforms passed 17 billion minutes of streaming consumption for the Paris Olympics — more than the combined total for all past summer and winter Olympics (dating to 2008, when live streaming was first offered via the web). The 2024 games have recorded almost four times the total from Tokyo three years ago (4.48 billion minutes) and are likely to pass 20 billion by the closing ceremony. If the Olympics were a streaming series, it would rank among the top 10 titles of the year so far, based on Nielsen’s weekly rankings.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

Minutes Watched for Originals This Year

Even as rivals spend billions on original programming, Netflix is far outpacing competitors for viewership marketshare from January to July 2024, per a Luminate report on July 19. That could be partially due to its vast subscriber lead (Netflix now has 277 million subscribers globally). Amazon's Prime Video and Paramount+ follow in terms of most-watched originals, notably outpacing Disney+'s franchise-powered service.
